27thAnnual Loisaida Festival
Revamped & Expanded to Full Weekend of Events!
Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25th
NEW YORK, NY – In this 2014 Loisaida Festival edition, Memorial Day Weekend will be transformed into an art and culture celebration in the Lower East Side. The Festival’s ambitious cultural and educational events will be integrated with the launching of the very first LES History Month, celebrated during the month of May. #LoisaidaFest will become the landmark event that celebrates Latino historical and contemporary contributions to the downtown by serving Puerto Rican and Latino families and bridging cultural and generational divides.
On Friday, May 23, Performing Loisaida: A Poets’ Jam in the Spirit of the New Rican Village at City Lore56 E 1st Street. This event will bring together poets and musicians in a celebration of the performance fusions that evolved throughout Loisaida/Lower East Side during the 1960’s and 1970’s at iconic venues such as the New Rican Village. Dedicated to the memory of legendary poets/playwrights/performers Tato Laviera and Amiri Baraka, the event will bring together a multigenerational array of voices to remember and celebrate this alternative Lower East Side history. This event is Co-Sponsored with City Lore. Admission is free.
On Saturday, May 24, The Production of Nabe: Loisaida’s land-use and environmental activism, past and present at the New Loisaida Center, 710 E 9th Street. This event will honor the breadth of achievements and resolve of the Loisaida community during the harsh times of disinvestment (1970’s-1980’s). The afternoon will offer a look back at the initiatives that shaped the lore of the Lower East Side to this day, and bring them to the present. Admission is free.
On Sunday, May 25th, Loisaida Inc. will celebrate the 27th Annual Loisaida Festival. This event will once again be held from 6th to 12th Streets in the Avenue C commercial corridor from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. There will be diverse manifestations of the Puerto Rican and Latino cultures expressed through music, cuisine and arts.
The Festival’s Main Stage will offer a diverse musical lineup, The Afro-Caribbean-meets New York City bomba and plena rhythms of Los Pleneros de La 21, the nostalgic big band revival of Rafael Hernandez’ greatest hits by Teatro Sea’s Romance, old-school salsa-swing meets spoken-word swagger of Flaco Navaja and The Razor Blades, the alternative Latino-Jamaican grooves of award winning Puerto Rican singer Mimi Maura, and the jazzy and baroque arrangements of Flor de Toloache, the first all-woman mariachi in NYC. The Festival will also re-instate the Loisaida Awards.
The Street Level experience will bring a mix of high human energy and “low-tech” artistry to display cultural traditions and integrate diverse workshops in movement, performance, arts and crafts and folklore showcasing the work of independent artists and artisans that represent diverse ethnic groups and nationalities. As always, the Festival will feature an array of delicious home-made ethnic cuisine and it will also serve as a vehicle to disseminate critical community information distributed by many local health and human services organizations.
As part of the new attractions Loisaida Inc. will host the Artistic Residency by Papel Machete, a theater collective that will work with Loisaida residents on the creation of a music, visual art and narrative piece about the stories of community struggle and resistance in the neighborhood. The finished piece will be debut on Saturday, May 24th at Loisaida New Community Center and on Sunday, May 25th at La Plaza Cultural Community Garden, located at 9th Street and Avenue C where Loisaida Inc will host its first Theater Lab with the talent of city based and cutting-edge Latino theater companies from 12pm to 5pm.
With a strong commitment to re-generative practices and sustainable culture, the Loisaida Festival intends to be a minimal-waste event.
