FANIA was created in 1964 in New York City. The label both then and now, had artists that performed a variety of musical styles, from Mambo to Boogaloo, Salsa to Jazz, but also later Disco and House. The artists and label drew from musical roots in Cuba but were hugely informed by their experience and life in the barrios of NYC, as well as contemporary American Culture to create a sound and style that embodies the melting pot that is NYC. The impact of this distinctly New York bred cultural phenomenon has had lasting influence in shaping the cultural landscape if the city and world.
50 years later, SummerStage aims to highlight and reflect on FANIA, with a series of events that showcase both the past and present across New York’s 5 boroughs where this movement was born. The series will be multidisciplinary, and include Dance, Music, Poetry, Theater, Film, Visual Arts, Panels and Family Programming. We will present legends that were on the label, artists who were part of the larger Salsa movement, and contemporary artists whose work are influenced by FANIA. Some highlights in the series include: John Leguizamo, Roberto Roena,Ismael Miranda, Típica 73, Ballet Hispanico, Moona Luna, Nuyorican Poets Café,Bobby Sanabria. Plus salsa dance classes, film screenings, panel discussions and more…
Come join us at SummerStage to celebrate the FANIA legacy, and New York City!
